At St. Clare's Episcopal Church, serving our neighbors – whether they live in our own community or across the ocean – is at the very heart of who we are as the People of God. We are Gathered, Changed, Sent. We are sent to tell the world about God's love and forgiveness and to invite others to join us in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Jesus said that we are to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. Service to others is how we show our love for our neighbor - and how we show our love of God.
Before we had a building to meet in, or before we even had a name, St. Clare's was serving the community in Christ's name. We have partnered with Harvesters Community Food Network and T.A. Edison Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas to serve children in the BackSnack program. This is a program designed to provide healthy food over the weekend for students on the free or reduced lunch program. We’re doing this because Jesus tells us to feed hungry people. But it is also well documented that children who aren’t hungry learn more and behave better in school.
We have been in the program since March 30, 2009 and would love to serve more schools as we grow. If you want to help us with this effort, please contact us here.
Our desire is to serve our community without neglecting God's people who live in distant lands. In addition to our local service, we also want to choose a national and an international mission service project. For example, the national mission project might be one that helps veterans and their families, or we might participate in disaster relief in the Gulf coast. For an international mission, we might help build a school in Haiti or provide medicine for the people of Kenya. When you join us, you will help determine where we serve.
In Matthew 25, Jesus says that when we help others in need, we serve Him. We invite you to join us here at St. Clare's as we serve God and our neighbor. Come and help us discern where we are being called to serve. Come and make a difference!
